DSS is staffed by personnel who provide and coordinate services for Western students with disabilities. The staff works with the University to modify campus facilities and programs to meet the students' individual needs. The staff also acts as liaison between the student and campus community and between the student and Macomb community.
All students who request services must have a documented disability to be eligible for services from DSS. It is recommended that students who feel they will require accommodations in order to pursue coursework at Western should contact the DSS office well in advance of attendance (three to six months); some equipment and services take additional time to bring into accord.
DSS requires that students complete a Request for Services Form and provide documentation verifying the disabling condition before services begin. Students who request accommodations in the classroom, i.e., extended testing time, note takers, etc., must provide documentation that verifies the disabling condition and makes the accommodation reasonable (e.g., specific learning disability, visual acuity, medication that may affect information processing).
