General Information
Your local hard drive is considered disposable. This is because it is just a mechanical device that can fail. Network drives, on the other hand, have multiple drives that they can fail over to and are backed up nightly. For this reason, it is essential that you save your files on the network drives.
We have two drives available for you to save your files - F:Users and G:Groups.
The F:users directory is for personal files that you have that you don't want to share with others. The G:Groups directory is a network location for an office. This location allows you to share documents with others in the office. The security on this directory varies by office. If you would like to review the groups security in your area, contact the helpdesk and someone will assist you.
Typically the G: drive is set up so everyone has access to files stored in it. Offices that have setup security based on the roles of individuals have set up a two or three tier security structure. Example: Staff my have access to a STAFF, STUDENTS and EVERYONE folder and Students may only have access to EVERYONE and STUDENTS folders.

Move the My Documents default location
Most programs default to saving files in MY DOCUMENTS. The MY DOCUMENTS reference on your computer can then be setup to default to the F: Drive.
To do this:
1. Go to Start - Then right click on My Documents.

2. Select properties - Displays the current location of My Documents on your computer. If it has F:\ in the window, then your document location is the network drive.
If not, then continue.
3. Select Move.

4. Select My Computer the + on the left hand side.
|
|
|
5. Select the F: Drive.
|
|
|
6. Select ok.
|
|
|
7. The properties now show F:\ in the window.
|
|
8. Press the OK button - a window will come up asking if you want to move the local files. Select yes.
9. You're done.

Backing up your Bookmarks or Favorites
Bookmarks and Favorites are stored on your local machine. To protect these, especially if you have a very large list of bookmarks, it is good to export a copy regularly to your F:Drive. Since the standard internet browser in the Division is Internet Explorer, the following example is based on that program. You can do a similar process in Netscape also.
You have to do this regularly to make sure your backup is up-to-date.
1. Open Internet Explorer and select Import and Export from the File Menu.

2. The Import/Export Wizard will appear.

|
3. Highlight Export Favorites - Press Next.
|
|
|
4. Make sure Favorites is highlighted, then press next.
|
|
5. Make sure the Export To file location is selected.
6. Enter F:\\bookmark .htm in the box for the file location.

|
7. The completed box will be displayed if the export was successful.
To import the bookmarks - follow the same direction except select Import Favorites on step 3.

Windows Error Reporting
When Windows recovers from a crashed program, a dialog asking to send the details to Microsoft will come up. If you have a program that is crashing frequently, then select the Send Report to Microsoft.

As this transmits the crash data, you will see the following dialog box.
When completed, select the close button.
Microsoft is using this data to develop patches for problems in the operating system.
