The LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Workshop Series provides students with comprehensive training and development to help them cultivate their leadership potential. Workshops are open to all students at WIU and address a wide range of topics.

Call for Programs

The Office of Student Activities is now accepting program proposals for the Fall 2009 L.E.A.D. (Leadership Education and Development) Workshop Series. The L.E.A.D. Workshop Series provides students with the opportunity to get education and training that will develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to be effective leaders and productive citizens. Programs should be no longer than one hour in length. To submit an online proposal form click here. Program proposals are due by Friday, May 1.

Proposals will be selected based on the following criteria:

Program Categories

Academic and Intellectual Competence - help students to identify and achieve academic goals; teach students how to develop intellectually; teach students to use complex information and form a decision or opinion. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Career Development - help students gain depth to their own career goals; highlight professionalism and expectations of work environments. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Civic Engagement and Service - help students identify and address issues of public concern; create a feeling of belonging, an experience of investment and ownership in the local, regional, national, and/or global communities to which they belong. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Cultural Awareness and Knowledge - help students in understanding, respecting, and appreciating differences among people; provide students with the tools to appropriately challenge unfair, unjust or uncivil behavior. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Healthy Lifestyle - articulate the relationship between health and wellness and accomplishing lifelong goals; promote creating a healthy community and environment; help students choose behaviors and environments that promote health; educate on how to recognize and address unhealthy behaviors in themselves and others. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Interpersonal Relationships - help students develop and maintain healthy, satisfying, and mutually rewarding interpersonal relationships with peers, family, colleagues and authority figures; help students recognize and address unhealthy relationships and relationship patterns; provide skills in resolving conflict. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Leadership Development - relate the concept of lifelong learner to individual leadership growth; help students understand that there are many roles that a leader may play; provide insight on how leadership roles apply to their lives; teach students the ethical/professional components of leadership; give students an understanding of various theories on leadership and apply them to their own leadership style. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Organizational Development - teach students involved in organizations the skills needed to work effectively as a group; give students a better knowledge of group dynamics and their affect on organizations' effectiveness; show students how to deal with change in an organization; show students how to achieve organizational goals through the collective efforts of organizational members. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Personal Development/Life Skills - assist in identifying personal skills and abilities; provide an assessment of personal strengths and challenges; help student in identifying and developing a value system and teaching them how to operate within that system of values; help produce self awareness and self confidence in students. Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

Other - The selection committee is open to other program proposals related to leadership that may not be defined within the given categories.
