General Information
Talk about being safe on campus with your student. One of the first things we can assure you is that Western has student safety as a top priority. We have many systems in place to ensure a safe campus: a full-time Office of Public Safety, campus lighting, campus emergency call boxes, escort services to and from campus buildings, 24hr residence hall information desks, building exterior locks, residence hall duty staff, and keyed elevators in many halls.
Students will encounter a great deal of programming on campus safety their first several weeks on campus. Encourage them to attend some of these programs and talk with their hall staff if they have any questions.
A Few Campus Safety Tips:
- Never walk alone at night
- Don't prop residence hall doors
- Make sure a friend knows where you plan to be
- Lock your room even when you leave to go to the restroom
- Don't leave cash or small valuables out in the open
- Use the campus escort service at night
- Never leave an event or party with someone you don't know well
- Never drink and drive
- Attend self defense workshop on campus
- Register your bike with the Office of Public Safety
