Involvement in leadership activities and/or positions is highly encouraged. The reason for this is that studies have consistently shown that students who are involved in different types of leadership activities are more likely to succeed and persist in college. Involvement in leadership activities is also important for students looking at job or graduate work after graduation as employers and graduate schools weigh this as part of the application process.
Most importantly, however, leadership development will help students hone the skills and make the relationships which will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Anyone can be a leader and if students have ideas regarding starting groups or ways to create further leadership opportunities, those ideas are always welcomed by residence life staff.
There are a myriad of leadership opportunities afforded to students living in residence life. The most traditional leadership opportunities are afforded through hall government. Students can be floor representatives or elected officials in the halls or Graduate & Family Housing.
Other leadership opportunities are afforded via student employment. Resident Assistants (RAs) and Desk Assistants are given a great amount of responsibility that enhances their leadership skills.
Inter-Hall Council is a student organization that acts as the governing body of the students living in the residence halls. It's IHC's goal to represent the views and concerns of all students living in the halls to administration and provide programming for all students. Each hall selects representatives to speak on behalf of all the students living in that hall and bring important issues to hall governments. For more information about IHC, visit their web site.
We offer several educational and social programs and activities that our residents participate in. These programs are designed to offer our residents the chance to get to know one another, to increase awareness and education, get involved in their communities, and to take a much needed break from studying. Programs are sponsored by RAs & Hall Governments within each hall.
