At one time, the Union Plaza was WIU's designated Free Speech Area. In May 2003, President Al Goldfarb announced that the policy on a designated free speech area would be dropped in favor of opening up the entire campus to freedom of speech.
"There is no better place for free and open expression of ideas than a public university. Our entire university represents the ideal of freedom of expression," Goldfarb said. "I do not believe that we would ever want to restrict free speech to a specific area on the campus."
