RE: 51 PERCENT program rundown
In America, women make up more than half the population. Worldwide, women are expected to outnumber men within the next 50 years. And every issue we face is one that affects us all. Whether it’s the environment, health, our children, politics or the arts, there’s a women’s perspective, and 51% is a radio program dedicated to that viewpoint.
Host Susan Barnett talks to experts in their field for a wide-ranging, entertaining discussion of issues that not only fall into the traditional ‘women’s issues’ category, but topics that concern us all as human beings and citizens of the global community.
Broadcast of 51% on WIUM 91.3 FM is underwritten by the Western Organization for Women (WOW).
Here is this week's information on 51% #1037

Charts of projected world population growth look like the up ramps of a rollercoaster...with a report from the UN Population Fund projecting that the world's population will explode from two and a half billion in 1950, to just under nine billion one hundred years later. Today, Laura Iiyama reports on efforts in Nepal that show just what this means.

Coming up...how much is your energy worth...and do you want to waste it sending email forwards?

Okay, let's talk about the F-word. Feminism. There was a time when it was a call to arms, a battle cry for equal rights and equal pay. Almost ten years into the new millennium, women still earn 70 cents on the dollar compared to men, and Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign was as much about her wardrobe as it was about her qualifications. So what does feminism mean now? Katie Britton chats with Amanda Marcotte, author, blogger and feminist.
6:26 Marcotte Britton
Whatever you earn, are you managing to save any money? Many of us are discovering a new relationship with the dollar bill as the recession drags on. And financial expert Manisha Thakor thinks it's time for reviving a system that translates what you spend, into what it actually costs you.
4:22 Thakor
Manisha Thakor is a financial expert, commentator and author. You can learn more about her at the website for her first book, onmyowntwofeet.com.
This week on 51%, we're talking about big issues - how population growth impacts every aspect of our lives...how feminism is changing in the new millennium. Financial expert Manisha Thakor dusts off an old idea that's making a lot of sense again. But Kimberly Kay has a commentary on an issue that everyone with a computer can relate to - people who send forwards. Is it life or death? Nope. But when you find six of these internet-age chain letters in your inbox, it sure does seem like a big issue.
3:03 Forwards Kay
Kimberly Kay lives, works and deletes forwards in the Catskills of New York.

BILLBOARD – Susan Barnett (:35) (Music Out)
The recession has monopolized our attention for the past several months...but the world hasn't stopped for us and international problems haven't vanished while we weren't looking. Today, we're turning our attention outside the US. First, Laura Iiyama reports on one of the world's hottest spots...Afghanistan.

Coming up...a country that has fallen off the economic cliff...and signs that China's human rights promises are still unfulfilled.

Next, let's talk about a country that, according to reports from both inside the country and outside, has fallen apart. Zimbabwe was in the news recently after 17 pro-democracy activists were re-arrested while recovering from injuries sustained during their recent imprisonment. Jestina Mukoko and other outspoken critics of the former Mugabe regime were released again, but the problems in Zimbabwe are deep and troubling. I spoke with Nondomiso Gasa, a South African activist who has been part of a hunger strike aimed at getting international attention targeted towards neighboring Zimbabwe.
5:23 Gasa
That's African civil rights leader Nondomiso Gasa.
Amy Agnew is based in Amnesty International's London office – and her job is to monitor what's happening in Africa – particularly in Zimbabwe. She sees the political oppression as a sign that attempts to create democracy there are being sabotaged.
1:10 Agnew
If you want to find out more, go to Amnesty International's website at amnesty.org
And finally, let's look at the ongoing problems in China. I became aware of the jailing of political dissident Liu Xiaobo after reading a letter posted online by his wife. She asked for international pressure to win the release of her husband, one of the country's leading intellectuals, along with other jailed political dissidents. And Larry Siems of the PEN American Center, an international group of writers and journalists based in New York City, says the group has a growing campaign to focus on governments that stifle free speech...including our own.
6:48 Siems

Recession, foreclosures, earthquakes in Italy and China, floods in St. Louis, hurricane Katrina, terrorists, war...and now swine flu! It can feel overwhelming. Babies don't come with instruction manuals, and no matter how hard they try, no mother is perfect. But some of them come darned close. My mom was one of those. She was my very best friend for most of my life. She was convinced there was nothing I couldn't do. And despite whatever mistakes she made, she'd set the bar high as I tried to be half as good a mom as she was. My mom died of cancer eight years ago. Until then, I didn't truly understand grief. But that experience has made me part of a universal experience - one that Dmae Roberts expresses beautifully in this essay she calls “Messages.”

Can we ever understand how tightly our lives are entwined with our parents before they're gone? Rachel Stein explores the aching holes that are left, and the disorientingly strange, yet familiar world that exists after loss.
3:49 Losses Stein
Rachel Stein is a professor at Siena College. She's working on a memoir about family and loss.
Our mothers are our first interpreters of the world...and our first teachers. This month's “She's All That” is a two-fer. Katie Britton gets behind the picture of two women whose relationship is the stuff of legend...a teacher and mentor who opened the world for her student, and a student whose inspiring story is far more complex than Hollywood would have you believe.

And finally, a contemplation on mothers, and mothering, from Sabrina Artel and TrailerTalk.
